Ginkaku-ji, or the Silver Pavilion is a Rinzai Zen temple built in the 15th Century as a retirement villa for a Shogun. It has a similar design, but is smaller and more understated than Kinkaku-ji or the Golden Pavilion, built by his grandfather. The wooden structures, gardens, raked sand mountain, and pond are beautifully maintained. Although a popular site for tourists to visit, it somehow still remains serene. Yoshida captures the atmosphere by showing people, but they do not dominate the natural beauty.
