Description
A Kura is a Japanese storehouse–thick-walled, often covered with white-washed plaster, and with ceramic tiled roofs–important to protect valued items from the periodic fires that swept through cities built of wooden houses. Well-to-do families might have one behind their home, and frequently merchants would construct large ones to help indicate their success. They are sometimes referred to by the Chinese name “godowns.”
