The artist did many images of his hometown during different seasons. He is probably most remembered for the numerous winter scenes. Here Saito used a bold embossing to define distant hill–see above the tree branches–and the outlines of the steeply pitched roofs. This was not a technique he used very often. Note how the design was altered from the 1953 version.
