Taira no Tomomori was a famous warrior of the Taira clan whose death in 1185 marked the fall of the Taira and and the rise of the Minamoto clan who ruled until 1333 as the Kamakura Shogunate. He is depicted in Kabuki Theater as a doomed heroic figure.
