The Pine Corridor was a famous large hallway in Edo Castle, known as the place where a young daimyo drew his sword in anger at a courtesan who was asking for bribes before teaching the young man the ways of the Court. In retributionk, the daimyo was forced to commit suicide. Some of his samurai warriors vowed revenge, and killed the courtesan several years later. The 47 Ronin became a classic tale of Honor among samurai. They took revenge for their master’s death, and then committed suicide themselves. Here Mori is depicting a scene from the Kabuki Theater play.
