Maki did quite a few prints using the kanji character for woman, but far fewer for man or child. I find using red ink makes this a particularly joyful rendition. Do you suppose the glossy black ink is meant as a gleam in the child’s eye?. Dan Tretiak designates this as one of Maki’s best “big red prints.”
