ZHOU Hao

Born: 1960 in Shanghai, died 2023
Medium: Monoprints, sumi painting and drawings

Mr. Zhou moved to Japan in 1983 to begin studying art. He graduated from Musashino Art University in 1983 and received an MFA degree from the same institution in 1990. Since marrying a Japanese woman, he then divided his time between Shanghai and Japan.
In his artwork, Zhou Hao captured a sense of mystery and intrigue with abstract creations. Although he sometimes used fine lines, it is the subtle tonality of broad swatches which capture the imagination. I find them somewhat reminiscent of the bottles and jars of Giorgio Morandi paintings. Additional texture is achieved by painting with sumi ink on thin handmade washi, then mounting onto a heavier backing paper.
In his career, the artist also taught at Utsonimiya Museum of Art and the Art and Architecture School of Waseda Universtiy in Tokyo.
