YOSHIMATSU Junichiro
Born: 1953 in Fukuoka, Japan
Medium: Silkscreen and Woodblock
Mr. Yoshimatsu received Bachelors and Masters degrees from Tama University where he studied art. A. prominent contemporary printmaker, he is highly regarded for the complex, multi-media print techniques which are heavily inspired by traditional Japanese culture. He is recognized for masterfully combining different printing methods. He might blend silkscreen, woodblock, collagraph, and leafing techniques on traditional Japanese paper.
The artist’s father was a Noh Theater actor, inspiring Nohgaku (Noh theater) as a central theme. His prints interpret the dramatic masks, spiritual essence, and geometric movements of the theater into striking abstract and figurative forms. Frequently he will incorporate bits of gold or silver leaf, evocative of the rich brocade costumes of Noh Theater actors. Yoshimatsu’s print editions are tightly limited (often in runs of only 20) and continue to be exhibited internationally through specialized dealers.
His works are held in the permanent collections of major global institutions, including:
The Library of Congress, Washington D.C., USA
Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), California, USA
Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, UK
Harvard Art Museum, Cambridge MA, USA
