Sandy WALKER
Born: 1942, Washington DC
Media: Woodblock Printmaking and Painting
Sandy Walker was raised in Washington, D.C. where he learned to love painting visiting the Phillips Collection and the National Gallery of Art. Walker graduated from Harvard College and attended four years of art school culminating in an M.F.A. in painting from Columbia University.
After receiving an undergraduate degree from Harvard, Sandy attended art schools for four years, earning an MFA in painting from Columbia University. While there, he also studied printmaking with Seong Moy (woodblock) and Tony Harrison (etching). In the late 1970’s, Walker traveled around the country painting directly from major American archetypal landscape sites, monuments, and national parks. This work laid the foundation for much of his later work inspired by nature.
Walker is married to dancer/choreographer Ellen Webb with whom he collaborated for many years. His work in dance led to years of drawing and painting from the human figure, especially the figure in movement. In his woodblock prints, the artist explores the bold forms of both trees and dancers, most often portrayed with black ink alone.
Some are larger than six feet.
