TANIGUCHI Shigeru

Born: 1948 in Fukuoka, Kyushu
Medium: Silkscreen

After finishing high school, Taniguchi left the southern island for metropolitan Tokyo. There he pursued art part-time while doing book illustrations and working at a commercial printing company. His prints are inspired from a very open-minded approach to life and widespread reading. Unlike many contemporary Japanese artists, Taniguchi’s themes have varied widely.

He has not traveled outside of Japan, and yet is particularly fascinated by foreign objects. Such seemingly mundane articles as international postage stamps, airline baggage tags, or old newspapers appear in printed form or in collage. His works are done in particularly small editions, often with the brush as a motif. He has incorporated such subjects as Noh Theater masks, old Samurai family portraits, and contemporary Western comic strips. Taniguchi is truly to be admired for the independence, creativity and subtle wit found in his unique creations.
